General project architecture

The following work flow diagram illustrates the overall work package organisation: the key feature is the iterative nature of the work flow, required to reach the various RTD players in Europe.

The work packages are organized as follows:

  • WP1, WP2, WP3: collect without any filtering the knowledge gaps required to meet the ETN 2020 vision;
  • WP4: based on 4 possible scenarios for energy demand in Europe, four roadmaps are produced to meet the vision orientations and/or to adjust it;
  • WP5: sets the rules for project risk evaluation (both technological and financial) and project funding at national or EU level;
  • WP6: provides the final RTD roadmap for invariant RTD topics to be launched, irrespective of the future energy scenarios for Europe;
  • WP7: provides a proposal for an autonomous and permanent RTD European Power Grid Research Organization together with its funding mechanisms to launch RTD actions;
  • WP8: implements dissemination actions to reach the critical size of players to perform the RTD tasks.

The work packages have been lumped together to address the following specific sub objectives:

Sub objective Sub objective description Work package description
01 To define the knowledge that lacks to support a collective vision of the performance upgrades required by the European Transmission Network in 2020

WP1 Demand pull knowledge and related RTD needs

WP2 Policy pull or push RTD needs

WP3 Technology push RTD needs

02 To delineate the candidate roadmaps which will support the underlying RTD work load required to meet the above needs WP4 Technology roadmap build up
03 To define, within these RTD roadmaps, the share of RTD work which will need joint and coordinated work at a European level and at the various national levels WP5 Coordination priorities at national and European levels
04 To propose scenarios for an autonomous and permanent RTD European Power Grid Research Organisation together with its funding mechanisms which will support the coordinated part of the work at a European level, in coherence with what will remain funded at national level

WP6 Roadmap convergence to bridge the knowledge gaps

WP7 European Power Grid Research Organisation and its funding needs and mechanisms to implement the roadmap

05 To reach a collective conviction about RTD performance and coordination of a majority of key players (TSO, research organisations, National Authorities and clients of the TSO) which will support the enhancement of an optimized European power transmission network WP8 Dissemination of results in view of reaching a large consensus on RTD needs and funding
